Our logs are old growth Western Red Cedar. Cedar has naturally occurring oils that enhance its resistant to decay and insects. Also, the tight growth rings of old growth cedar make it a very stable wood to build with. The logs average 14 inches in diameter, with the tips being approximately 10 inches in diameter and the butts are up to 24 inches in diameter. This home is “chinkless” or “full scribe” meaning each log is scribed to fit the one underneath. We also chose the diamond notch instead of the more traditional saddle notch. This notch has more character and when it’s combined with the staggered root flares it creates a very rustic and unique look. We have an architect who specializes in designing log homes who can help you get started. This was one of the best decisions we made. He had built log homes prior to becoming an architect so he had working knowledge of logs and knew what would work and what wouldn’t. However, please feel free to use any architect that you feel comfortable with. All we need are the blueprints or your own drawings and then we can give you a price.
